Today we set out to explore Barcelona by bike -- we plan to do this in all the cities we visit over the next 5 weeks, ending in Paris in July! A month or so ago I went on a tour with Austin's bike program manager and representatives from the Green Lane Project to showcase progress our city has made on creating safer biking opportunities. Thankfully, Austin has been making a move to create more protected bike lanes that will make it safer for families with children to bike throughout the city. But we have a long way to go. Routes like South Lamar are still death traps.
I wonder if South Lamar could be converted to look like this - with a protected bike lane running right down the center, plus, tall shade trees all up and down the sides of the street!!

We even had our own bike signals. |
|
A lot of the bike lanes we came across are part of the sidewalk. |
|
The shade trees were a huge asset in the heat of the afternoon. |
|
The bikes lanes can also be found in a ped/bike zone in between zones for cars and buses.
Here: A lane for cars on the right with parking. Then more lanes on the left.
The set up seems to be working because we have yet to come across a traffic jam! |

Bike rental place at end of ride.
