We arrived in San Sebastian, Spain, on Sunday night, where we have rented an apartment for two weeks. San Sebastian, which is in northern Spain -- part of the Basque region -- is the perfect city to visit with kids. In addition to being 4 blocks from one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe, this city is designed for children. Our apartment is in the heart of the city, and yet my kids can safely run around in the streets without being hit by a car -- AND can walk within two blocks to three bakeries and three ice cream shops (heladerias). Our cumulative chocolate croissant count is now up to 18 in 6 days so we have decided to stop counting!
Like Barcelona, there are plazas, parks, and play areas throughout the city that are especially welcoming for my children. No high rises, but the perfect level of urban density that allows for the whole city to be a playground for children and their parents. The streets come in a range of sizes and layouts to accommodate pedestrians, cars, and bicycles, and in the afternoons and evenings, it seems like the whole city goes out for a stroll. I'll take more pictures of this tomorrow. Haven't had a chance to take many photos here yet.
